Monthly Interior Design Interview – Jace Interiors

It’s Monthly Interior Designer Interview Time!! This month we had the opportunity to get to know designer Julie Covino of Jace Interiors.

Why interior design?

I started out on the fashion path and made a gradual move to interiors! It’s a much bigger “puzzle” to pull together and I love the challenge of finding just the right fabric pattern, tone of paint and accents. Rooms tell a story and how you tell that story is fascinating to me.

What is your favorite color combination to design with?

Right now I am loving the rich combination of Navy and a warm camel. It’s like a gorgeous night and a roaring fire combined!

If you could design a home for any celebrity, who would it be and why?

I would say Amy Poehler for a few reasons but mainly because she is just like most of my clients now. A working mom of 2 small children, most likely running in 10 different directions but still deserving of a stylish home with a little oasis just for her!  She is also hilarious and I bet collaborating with her would be fun as we find whimsical pieces to convey their humor! Lastly because she is from my hometown!!

For regular folk, where is the best place to get home accessories?

Supporting local Etsy designers and mom/pop stores in your area is the best place to find unique accents and you are helping your community so it is a win win! If you need to look further I say there is no better place than a Homegoods, it can be a treasure hunt but the gold can be incredible!

Fashion trends seem to influence home decor.  Do you think the ‘tuck in and roll pants’ will ever make a come back, and how do you see them translated into home decor?

HA! Oh my I am not sure about the “tuck and roll” but the roll is certainly coming back into fashion. I think that might just be one of those fashion only trends and “rolling” up the throw at the end of the sofa does not count!

What is your best quick/inexpensive fix idea for someone to redo a room?

We all know paint is the quickest way to change a room but honestly if you “shop” your own house you will be surprised at what you can do. Move the dining room rug to the living room, swap the window treatments from the guest room to the office, rearrange your wall decor. These are super easy things to do and immediately you will have that “new feel” to the room and you will most likely fall in love with your pieces all over again! If you have money to spend I would say spend it on lighting and window treatments both dramatically change the feel of a room!

Why do you think Modern Bird Studios is so insanely awesome?

Have you seen your work? It’s fantastic and so unique! I am loving the acrylic/wood combo and want to have a little precious one just to mount her mug up on my wall! Maybe a puppy will do?!

What are your must-read design blogs?

There are way too many to list but a few of my dailies are Coco+Kelley, Plush Palate, Bright Bazaar, Apartment_34, Haute Design, Sweet Eventide, Dress Design Decor and of course Modern Bird!

Your tip about shopping your own home is such a good one. I love that – totally calling my Mum now to tell her to do that!
P.S. Thank you for the kind mention, Julie!

I loved this post! I am definitely liking the camel and navy. We want to redo our bedroom. Maybe that is the direction we should go! I also love that you would want to decorate Amy Poehler’s house. Ha! She is hilarious and I bet that would be fun!

Hearing about this interview from you guys made my day yesterday. I’ve fallen behind since starting a new job but I was tickled beyond belief to read this interview and I’m honored to be one of Julie’s daily reads! Gosh I better get busy giving her something new to read!
